Jazz Chisholm Jr. Breaks Out of Slump with Home Run, But Yankees Fall to Giants
Bahamian MLB star Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr. snapped out of a career-worst 0-for-24 slump in a big way on Sunday, launching his fifth home run of the season in the New York Yankees’ narrow 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Yankee Stadium.
Chisholm Ends Slump with Solo Blast in the Eighth
Struggling at the plate in recent games, Chisholm delivered when it mattered late in the game. Facing a 2-2 count in the bottom of the eighth inning, the 27-year-old connected on an 83.1 mph sinker from Giants reliever Tyler Rogers, sending the ball 361 feet over the right-field fence with a 95.7 mph exit velocity. The solo home run brought the Yankees within one run, though they ultimately couldn’t complete the comeback.
Chisholm finished the day 1-for-4, lowering his batting average to .169, but his five home runs rank him among the top 10 power hitters in MLB. He also has 10 RBIs, nine runs scored, and four stolen bases so far this season.
Yankees' Rally Falls Short in Close Loss to Giants
New York jumped to an early 3-0 lead but couldn’t hold off San Francisco’s surge. The Giants scored one in the fourth and added three more in the sixth inning thanks to Jung Hoo Lee’s second home run of the game—a three-run blast that gave San Francisco a 4-3 lead.
A solo homer in the seventh extended the Giants’ lead to 5-3. Chisholm’s homer in the eighth cut the deficit, but the Yankees were retired in order over the final two innings, with Aaron Judge striking out looking to end the game.
The Yankees dropped the weekend series, losing two out of three to the Giants. They now sit at 8-7, just behind the Toronto Blue Jays (9-7) in the American League East standings.
Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s Season Stats and Outlook
Despite a recent cold stretch at the plate, Chisholm continues to show power and speed. He is currently slashing .169/.246/.458, and many analysts still believe he’s on pace for a potential 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases season, provided he stays healthy.
On defense, Chisholm has been solid at second base, with 35 assists, 15 putouts, and a .962 fielding percentage, having committed just two errors so far this year. He batted fifth in Sunday’s lineup and is expected to remain a key piece of the Yankees' offensive core.
What’s Next for the Yankees?
The Yankees begin a three-game home series against the Kansas City Royals starting today. After that, they’ll travel to Tampa, Florida, for a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Chisholm and the Yankees will look to bounce back and regain momentum as they continue to battle in the competitive AL East.
