Padres Edge Athletics 2-1 to Win Series at Sutter Health Park

The Oakland Athletics wrapped up their three-game homestand at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to the San Diego Padres in the series finale. Osvaldo Bido took the mound for the A’s, facing off against Padres starter Randy Vasquez.
A’s Strike First in the Second Inning
Oakland got on the board in the bottom of the second. Shea Langeliers and JJ Bleday drew back-to-back walks to start the inning, followed by a single from Jacob Wilson to load the bases. Luis Urías then hit a sacrifice fly to shallow centerfield. While Langeliers was initially called out at home, the call was overturned on review, giving the A’s an early 1-0 lead.
Jacob Wilson’s single also extended his impressive hitting streak to 13 games to start the season. He continues to chase Jason Giambi’s franchise record 25-game hit streak set in 1997.
San Diego Responds in the Third and Fifth
The Padres tied things up in the top of the third. Xander Bogaerts and Manny Machado hit consecutive singles, and after Osvaldo Bido struck out Gavin Sheets, Oscar Gonzalez singled to bring home Bogaerts and even the score at 1-1.
Bogaerts stayed hot in the fifth with a leadoff double—his third hit of the game. Machado flied out to move Bogaerts to third, and a sacrifice fly from Sheets gave San Diego a 2-1 lead.
Strong Bullpen Work Keeps It Close
Angel Perdomo took over for Bido in the sixth after the starter allowed nine hits and two earned runs over five innings. Noah Murdock entered in the seventh and worked around a walk to Machado by inducing an inning-ending double play from Sheets.
The A’s threatened in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Lawrence Butler drew a walk and stole second, but Brent Rooker struck out to end the inning.
Ninth Inning Comes Up Short for Oakland
Justin Sterner pitched the ninth, giving up a single to Martín Maldonado and a walk to Machado. TJ McFarland replaced Sterner and got Yuli Gurriel, pinch-hitting for Sheets, to ground out and end the threat.
In the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Soderstrom drew a leadoff walk against Padres closer Robert Suarez. However, Langeliers grounded into a double play, and JJ Bleday popped out to center, sealing the 2-1 victory and series win for San Diego.
What’s Next for the A’s
With the series loss, the A’s fall to 1-2 in the homestand. They’ll take Thursday off before kicking off a weekend series against the New York Mets at Sutter Health Park.
