San Francisco 49ers Eye C.J. Mosley Reunion with Robert Saleh in Bid to Reignite Defense
The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2024 NFL season with high expectations as the reigning NFC Champions, still stinging from their narrow Super Bowl LVIII loss.
However, what began with championship hopes quickly unraveled. Plagued by a wave of injuries to key players, the Niners stumbled to a disappointing 7-10 finish, missing the playoffs entirely.
Adding to the offseason woes, San Francisco lost multiple key contributors in free agency, a sacrifice largely made to clear cap space for a potential Brock Purdy contract extension—a deal many believe he’s earned after taking over as the team’s starter and leading them to a Super Bowl appearance.
Robert Saleh Returns to Revive Struggling Defense
In a bold move to restore their former dominance on defense, the 49ers brought back Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator. Saleh previously served in the same role with San Francisco from 2017 to 2020 before leaving to become the New York Jets' head coach.
Under Saleh's leadership, the 49ers were known for their aggressive, swarming defense. That’s a stark contrast to last season’s unit, which ranked 29th in points allowed, one of the worst in the NFL.
49ers Should Target Free Agent LB C.J. Mosley
With the defense in need of reinforcements—especially after the loss of linebacker Dre Greenlaw, the 49ers should pursue free agent linebacker C.J. Mosley. The five-time Pro Bowler has a long history with Saleh, having played under him during their time with the Jets.
“Reloading the linebacker group should still be a priority,” Knox wrote. “C.J. Mosley was limited to four games in 2024 due to toe and neck injuries, and he’ll turn 33 in June. But he’s a seasoned veteran with Pro Bowl pedigree and familiarity with Saleh’s system.”
Why Mosley Makes Sense for the 49ers
Despite his injury setbacks in 2024, Mosley proved he could still perform at a high level as recently as 2023, when he recorded:
- 152 total tackles (82 solo)
- Seven passes defended
- Five tackles for loss
- Two forced fumbles
Mosley ranked 22nd out of 189 NFL linebackers in run defense grade—a key area where the 49ers struggled last season.
Pairing Mosley with All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner could give San Francisco a formidable duo in the heart of the defense. While Mosley may not be an every-down player at this stage of his career, his leadership and familiarity with Saleh’s scheme could be crucial in rebuilding the unit.
Can the 49ers Bounce Back in 2025?
With Robert Saleh’s return, a potential veteran addition like Mosley, and a fully healthy roster, the 49ers are aiming to reclaim their status as Super Bowl contenders in the 2025 NFL season. The front office’s next moves will be critical in shaping a defense capable of once again leading them deep into the playoffs.
