Washington Commanders - Dillon Gabriel Linked as Potential UDFA Target

The Washington Commanders are coming off a thrilling 2024 NFL season, finishing with a 12-5 record, securing second place in the NFC East, and making a deep run to the NFC Championship Game, where they eventually fell short to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now, as the 2025 NFL offseason continues, the Commanders have made several key roster moves to build on last season’s momentum. Among the most notable additions:
- Deebo Samuel acquired via trade to strengthen the receiving corps
- Javon Kinlaw signed on a three-year, $45 million deal to reinforce the defensive front
With free agency mostly in the rearview, the attention now turns to the 2025 NFL Draft, where all eyes are on the next wave of talent.
While the Commanders have their franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels—who just earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Pro Bowl nod—they may still look to add depth at the QB position.
Dillon Gabriel Projected to Sign With Commanders as Undrafted Free Agent
According to Ben Solak of ESPN, the Commanders are a likely landing spot for Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel as a potential undrafted free agent (UDFA) following the draft.
"Gabriel leaves college as one of the most productive passers in NCAA history, but he does not project as an NFL passer," Solak noted. "He's 5-11 and lacks the arm strength and mobility of smaller QBs like Bryce Young or Kyler Murray. However, his quick release and high football IQ make him a strong fit for college-style systems like those run by Kliff Kingsbury in Washington."
Gabriel is coming off a stellar senior season at Oregon, where he:
- Completed 326 of 447 passes
- Threw for 3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions
- Finished third in Heisman Trophy voting
While Gabriel wouldn’t be in contention for the starting job—thanks to Daniels' breakout year—he could be a valuable depth option and compete in training camp. The current backup quarterback battle includes Marcus Mariota and Sam Hartman, and Gabriel could join that mix to fight for a roster or practice squad spot.
Final Thoughts
The Commanders are clearly pushing forward with a win-now mentality. With a strong core, savvy offseason additions, and a potential QB depth move in Dillon Gabriel, Washington looks primed to remain a top contender in the NFC.
