Anaheim Ducks Fire Head Coach Greg Cronin After Two Seasons
Anaheim Ducks Fire Head Coach Greg Cronin After Two Seasons
The Anaheim Ducks have fired head coach Greg Cronin just days after wrapping up the 2024-25 NHL season with a 35-37-10 record, finishing 16 points out of a playoff spot. The team has yet to name a replacement.
“Greg was instrumental in helping our young core grow,” said GM Pat Verbeek, “but after careful evaluation, I felt a new voice was needed as we continue our push toward becoming a Stanley Cup contender.”
Cronin, 61, posted a 62-87-15 record over two seasons. This was his first NHL head coaching job after nearly four decades in coaching and player development, including time with the Colorado Eagles (AHL) and assistant roles with the Maple Leafs and Islanders.
The Ducks haven’t made the playoffs since the 2017-18 season and haven’t had a winning record since. Cronin becomes the third Ducks coach fired since their last postseason appearance.
Fan Backlash & Criticism of Cronin’s Style
Throughout the season, fans and former players expressed growing concern over Cronin’s intense coaching style, citing its negative impact on player development. A fan-led movement even created a website, firecronin.com, urging ownership to make a change.
Despite a promising coaching résumé—including leading Northeastern to the NCAA Tournament and co-founding USA Hockey’s National Development Program—Cronin's tenure with Anaheim ends without a playoff berth.
