Edmonton Oilers Sign Goalie Prospect Samuel Jonsson to Three-Year Entry-Level Deal
The Edmonton Oilers have officially signed goaltending prospect Samuel Jonsson to a three-year entry-level contract, the team announced on Saturday.
Jonsson, a 21-year-old native of Gävle, Sweden, was selected by the Oilers in the fifth round (158th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft. He is coming off a standout season in HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden’s second-tier professional league.
Dominant Season Earns Jonsson Contract with Oilers
This past season, Jonsson played 24 games for BIK Karlskoga, posting an impressive 17-6-0 record. He finished the year with a 1.88 goals-against average (GAA), a .922 save percentage (SV%), and six shutouts, leading the league in both GAA and shutouts.
As a result of his stellar performance, the 6-foot-5 netminder was named HockeyAllsvenskan’s Goalie of the Year—a major accolade that highlights his potential as a future NHL talent.
Playoff Performance Shows Poise Under Pressure
Jonsson also held strong in the postseason, appearing in five playoff games where he recorded a 2.15 GAA and .913 SV%, further cementing his reputation as one of Sweden’s top up-and-coming goaltenders.
What’s Next for Samuel Jonsson and the Oilers?
The Oilers are investing in their future crease depth with Jonsson, who brings size, calmness under pressure, and proven consistency at a high level overseas. With development time and experience, the Swedish standout could become a valuable asset in Edmonton’s goaltending pipeline.
Jonsson is expected to begin his North American career in the AHL or ECHL as he transitions to the NHL style of play.
