Minnesota Vikings Waive Cornerback Nahshon Wright as Roster Takes Shape for 2025 Season
The Minnesota Vikings are continuing to fine-tune their 90-man roster ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, with an emphasis on bolstering their defense. One area that remains a priority is cornerback, where the Vikings are looking to improve depth.
Cornerback Position Remains a Key Need for Vikings
With Stephon Gilmore and Shaquill Griffin both hitting free agency after their 2024 seasons with Minnesota, the Vikings are left needing additional depth at cornerback. The team currently has a solid foundation with Byron Murphy Jr., Isaiah Rodgers, and Tavierre Thomas, but Mekhi Blackmon's recovery from a torn ACL, which sidelined him for the 2024 season, raises some concerns.
Vikings Part Ways with Veteran Cornerback Nahshon Wright
In a recent move, the Vikings decided to waive Nahshon Wright, a cornerback they acquired via trade with the Dallas Cowboys during the 2024 training camp. According to league reports, the Vikings officially waived Wright, signaling their intention to continue shaping the roster as they approach the offseason.
The Wright-Cowboys Trade: What It Means for Minnesota
Wright was traded to Minnesota in exchange for cornerback Andrew Booth, who had been selected by the Vikings in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Wright, who was drafted by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, had a brief stint with the Vikings.
In his only appearance for Minnesota in 2024, Wright played in a game against the Arizona Cardinals on December 1 but did not record any defensive snaps. He did contribute 15 special teams snaps in that contest. His NFL career includes 33 games played, 37 tackles, one interception, and five passes defensed.
The Vikings’ Cornerback Depth Chart and Upcoming Needs
With Wright’s departure, Minnesota will look to further solidify its cornerback depth through the remainder of the offseason and into the draft. The Vikings have room for improvement in this area to compete at a higher level in the 2025 season.
