NFL Approves Player Participation in Flag Football at 2028 Summer Olympics

NFL players will officially be eligible to participate in the flag football tournament at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, following a unanimous vote by league owners on Tuesday during the NFL’s spring meetings.

NFL Players Cleared for Olympic Flag Football

The resolution, approved in Eagan, Minnesota, paves the way for players under NFL contract to try out for Olympic flag football teams. The sport will make its debut at the 2028 Games, which are set to take place from July 14 to July 30, 2028.

Key Details of the Resolution

  • All NFL players under contract are eligible to try out for Olympic flag football teams.
  • One NFL player per team may participate on a national team roster.
  • NFL teams’ designated international players may represent their home countries.
  • The NFL will purchase league-wide insurance to protect players in the event of injury during Olympic competition.
  • Injured players will trigger a salary cap credit for their respective NFL teams.

Olympic Flag Football Format

  • Six men’s teams and six women’s teams will compete.
  • Each team will have a 10-player roster.
  • Games will be played in a five-on-five format.

Reaction from NFL & NFLPA Leadership

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed excitement about the league’s participation on the Olympic stage:

“It’s an incredible honor for any athlete to represent their country in the Olympics, which is the pinnacle of global sport. The inclusion of flag football has sparked a tremendous amount of excitement among NFL players. We are thrilled they now have that chance.”

NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell, Jr. echoed the league’s sentiments, while emphasizing player safety:

“Players have expressed to us a great desire for the honor of competing in the Olympics. We’re excited that our members will be able to represent their country on the highest international stage. We look forward to working with the league, IFAF, and Olympic authorities to ensure player protections.”
