Yankees Crush Mariners 11-5 Behind Grisham's 2 HRs, But Cabrera Injury Looms Large
Trent Grisham powered the New York Yankees to a commanding 11-5 win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night at T-Mobile Park, hitting two home runs—including a crucial blast during the Yankees’ six-run fifth inning. While the victory marked a strong offensive showing for New York, it was overshadowed by a late-game injury to third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera, who had to be taken off the field in an ambulance.
Cabrera suffered the injury in the top of the ninth inning when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge. The third baseman appeared to injure his left leg on an awkward slide, reaching back toward the plate before collapsing in visible pain. He remained down for several minutes before being loaded onto a stretcher and transported for medical evaluation.
Before the injury, the Yankees had already built a sizable lead thanks in large part to Grisham. After a solo home run in the third inning that just eluded a leaping Julio Rodríguez in center field, Grisham launched his second homer in the fifth to ignite a six-run outburst. New York quickly piled on after that, with Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger ripping back-to-back RBI singles off Mariners starter Emerson Hancock, who fell to 1-2 on the season. Austin Wells then broke the game wide open, sending a Hancock changeup over the fence for a three-run homer, his eighth of the year.
Clarke Schmidt improved to 1-1 with the win, limiting the Mariners’ offense for most of the night. Seattle's only real offense came via the long ball, as Rodríguez and Jorge Polanco each hit solo homers, while Cal Raleigh added a two-run shot in the eighth inning. It wasn’t nearly enough to overcome New York’s explosive fifth inning.
The loss marked Seattle’s fourth straight defeat, their longest losing streak of the season. With the Athletics gaining ground in the AL West standings, the Mariners now lead Oakland by just 1.5 games.
One of the game’s turning points came when Wells, after falling behind in the count, jumped on a changeup that caught too much of the plate and sent it into the seats, putting the Yankees ahead by five runs and effectively sealing the win.
Veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt continued his road dominance with another clutch performance. His RBI single in the fifth inning extended his road hitting streak to 20 games. Over that span, Goldschmidt has recorded seven doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBIs away from Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees and Mariners will meet again Tuesday night for the second game of the three-game set. Seattle will send right-hander Bryan Woo (4-1, 3.25 ERA) to the mound, while New York counters with red-hot lefty Max Fried (6-0, 1.05 ERA), who looks to keep his perfect record intact.
